Training in HAZWOPER is mandatory for those working at sites with contamination. The main distinction between the 24 hour and 40 hour HAZWOPER training revolves around the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs). Various Hazardous Waste and Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training options exist, and the HAZWOPER 24 is a 24 hour course tailored for those working at sites identified as HAZWOPER under the OSHA rule 29 CFR 1910.120. This training caters to workers who may not face daily risks, but there's a potential for exposure to chemical hazards.
This 24 hour HAZWOPER training can be completed online. However, regardless of the training format (online or in-person), employers must instruct employees on how to operate any relevant equipment based on performance standards. Such site-specific instructions, especially concerning the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like respirators, often can't be addressed in general seminars or classes open to the public.
For professionals involved in hazardous substance cleanups who might be exposed to these materials, a minimum of 24 hours of off-site instruction is required. Additionally, they need at least one day of on-site field experience under the guidance of an experienced and trained supervisor.
It's worth noting that states with plans approved by U.S. OSHA need to maintain standards that match or exceed federal HAZWOPER training stipulations. Some of these states might even impose extra training requirements.
